Where is it? – fractions, percentages and decimals on a number line
Move the marker to where the number is. After each answer you will see the right place and the line split into equal parts.
Where is the number ?
How do you play?
You will see a number – a fraction, a decimal or a percentage. Move the marker to where the number is on the line and click “Mark”. Then you will see the right place and the line split into equal parts. There are 10 numbers and no time limit. In Poland decimals are written with a comma: 0,25 means 0.25. The game uses the Polish way, as in school and in the exam.
What hints are there?
Grid – there are squares behind the line, like in an exercise book. At the first level the line from 0 to 1 has 20 squares, so one square is 0,05: 3/10 is 6 squares and 1/4 is 5 squares. For thirds, sixths and eighths the line has 24 squares. Benchmark fractions – the line only has marks at ¼, ½ and ¾. No hint – estimating only.
Start with the grid. When you hit the target several times in a row, try benchmark fractions and then no hint.
How do you find a fraction on the line?
The denominator tells you into how many equal parts you split the line from 0 to 1. The numerator tells you how many of those parts you count from zero. 3/4: split into 4 parts and count 3 – halfway between 1/2 and 1. Turn a percentage into a fraction: 30% = 30/100 = 3/10. Read a decimal as a fraction: 0,7 = 7/10.
What is the most common mistake?
Thinking that 1/8 is bigger than 1/4 because 8 is bigger than 4. It is the other way round: the more parts you split a whole into, the smaller each part is. On the line 1/8 is closer to zero than 1/4.
How does this help in the eighth-grade exam?
In the Polish eighth-grade exam fractions appear in many questions: you compare them, add them and turn them into percentages. In 2025, question 16 asked pupils to justify an answer by adding fractions – the success rate was 46%. When you can see where 3/4 or 0,6 is on the line, it is easier to check whether a result makes sense.

Questions about the game
How do you mark a fraction on a number line?
Split the line from 0 to 1 into as many equal parts as the denominator says, and count from zero as many parts as the numerator says.
Where is 0,6 on the line?
0,6 is 6/10, six of ten equal parts of the line from 0 to 1 – a little past the middle.
Is the game free?
