Result of the day – guess the calculation
You know the result – guess the calculation that gives it. Every try must give the same result, and the hints show which characters are in the right place.
Result:
- right place
- it is there, but in another place
- not in the calculation (or not that many times)
Your result
How do you play?
You know the result, for example 54. Your task is to guess the six-character calculation that gives it, for example 44+2·5. Each of your tries must also give 54 – otherwise it doesn’t count and you don’t lose a try.
After each try every character gets a hint: ✓ – the character is in the right place, ↔ – the character is in the calculation, but in another place, ✗ – the character is not in the calculation, or not that many times. You have six tries. The puzzle of the day is the same for everyone, and there are unlimited practice puzzles.
The signs are the ones used in Polish schools: a raised dot · means multiplication (mnożenie) and a colon : means division (dzielenie).
Why is 44+2·5 equal to 54 and not 230?
First multiply and divide, then add and subtract: 2·5 = 10, then 44 + 10 = 54. If you worked from left to right, you would get (44 + 2)·5 = 230 – a common mistake. In this game every try practises exactly this order.
How do you start if you don’t know what to enter?
Start with a simple calculation that gives the result, for example for 54: 50+2·2. Then look at the hints: keep the characters marked ✓ in place, move the ones marked ↔, and don’t use the ones marked ✗ more times than ✓ and ↔ show.
How does this help in the eighth-grade exam?
In the Polish eighth-grade exam the order of operations is needed in every question with an expression. In 2025, question 2 – working out the value of an expression in the right order – was answered correctly by 46% of pupils, and question 7 with roots and fractions by only 37%.
